1. Hydration

  • Why it’s important: The high altitudes can be very dry, and dehydration is a common issue.

  • Tips: Always carry water with you and sip throughout the day. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, as they can dehydrate you. Consider bringing electrolyte tablets for better hydration.

2. Sun Protection

  • Why it’s important: The sun is stronger at high altitudes, even on cloudy days.

  • Tips: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every 2 hours, especially if sweating. Wear sunglasses with UV protection and use lip balm with SPF.

3. Clothing and Footwear

  • Why it’s important: The weather varies from cold in the mornings to warm in the afternoons.

  • Tips: Wear layers (light jackets, sweaters, and breathable clothing). Bring sturdy shoes for hiking and motorcycle riding. Don’t forget a rain jacket for sudden showers.

4. Motorcycle Safety Gear

  • Why it’s important: Safety is crucial, especially on mountain roads.

  • Tips: Always wear a helmet, gloves, knee pads, and a protective jacket. Double-check that everything fits well before starting your ride.

5. Altitude Sickness

  • Why it’s important: Cusco and other destinations are at high altitudes, which can lead to altitude sickness.

  • Tips: Stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals, and rest on your first day. If you feel unwell (headache, dizziness), let your guide know. Consider bringing altitude sickness pills (consult with a doctor before).

6. Food and Local Cuisine

  • Why it’s important: You’ll experience new flavors, but be mindful of your stomach.

  • Tips: Start with lighter meals if you’re not used to local foods. Bring snacks for long rides, like nuts or granola bars. Be cautious of street food if you have a sensitive stomach.

7. Money and Currency

  • Why it’s important: Many places in remote areas don’t accept cards.

  • Tips: Carry enough soles (local currency) for markets and small purchases. ATMs are available in cities, but not in remote areas. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash at once.

8. Charging Devices

  • Why it’s important: Power outlets may not always be accessible.

  • Tips: Bring a power bank to keep your devices charged. Ensure your phone, GPS, or camera has enough battery for long days.

9. Respect for Local Culture

    • Why it’s important: The Andean culture is rich and traditional.

    • Tips: Always ask permission before taking photos of locals or their homes. Be respectful of local customs and wildlife, and always clean up after yourself.
